How to collect study samples

Step by step guide on how to collect samples for study.

Water Sample Collection

  1. Collect water from the kitchen sink (unfiltered tap).
  2. Ensure no water has been used for 8 hours.
  3. Avoid touching the inside of the bottle or cap.
  4. Fill the bottle slowly, stopping before it overflows.
  5. Seal tightly after collection.
  6. Record date, time, and details on the chain of custody document.

  • Next Steps:
  • Place the sample in a Ziploc bag to prevent leaks.

Dust Sampling Procedure

Handwashing

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Dry with a clean paper towel.

Collecting Field Blank:

  • Use the "blank" tube.
  • Open the ghost wipe package without contaminating the wipe.
  • Fold the wipe four times and place it in the tube.

Floor Dust Sample Collection:

  1. Lay down the cardboard template without touching the center.
  2. Open the ghost wipe and place it inside the template.
  3. Press firmly across the surface, moving diagonally and ensuring even pressure.
  4. Avoid going beyond the template.
  5. Fold the wipe with the dust inside four times.

Windowsill Dust Sample:

  1. Open the ghost wipe and wipe the windowsill’s top surface.
  2. Capture the dust by folding the wipe with the dusty side inwards.
  3. Measure the length and width of the wiped area using a tape measure.

Documenting and Sealing:

  1. Record the sample collection date, time, and measurements on the chain of custody form.
  2. Place all samples (floor, windowsill, and field blank) in Ziploc bags and seal tightly to prevent contamination.
  3. Double-check that all required details (e.g., length and width of windowsill) are noted.

Final Steps:

  • Wash hands again after collecting the samples.
  • Complete the chain of custody form with the necessary information and store the samples for transport.

Soil Sampling Procedure

Choosing Locations:

  1. Select three different locations around the house, within 3 feet of the walls, ideally on different sides.
  2. Look for areas with bare soil or minimal covering (e.g., leaves or grass that can be pushed aside).

Collecting Soil Samples:

  1. Wash hands before starting.
  2. Dig down about 2 inches into the soil and loosen the soil.
  3. Collect one scoop from each of the three locations, mixing soil layers.

Documenting and Sealing:

  1. After collecting the samples, place them in a labeled jar.
  2. Make a quick sketch of the house to mark sample locations and record date and time on the chain of custody form.
  3. Seal the samples in a bag and prepare for shipping.
